New tenants for The Reed include sleek Italian espresso cafe, wine bar, and plant store

The Reed Opera House is getting a re-do. Renovations have begun and new tenants are slated for a soon-to-be-reorganized space.

California-based Cumberland Holdings and real estate developer Scott Chernoff bought The Reed in 2018 along with 120 Commercial Street NE, the former Spaghetti Warehouse building that now houses Masonry Grill and Alley Cat.

With the Commercial Street property complete, the developer has directed focus to updating the warren of mixed-use commercial spaces at The Reed Opera House, located at 189 Liberty Street NE.

“There’s so much potential there,” Chernoff said. “We believe it could be the central hub of commercial activity in downtown Salem.”
